Our risk management program involves:
- Identifying possible hazards;
- Assessing the risks;
- Determining and implementing appropriate control measures; and reviewing the control measures
Hazard Identification
Our methods of identifying hazards include:
- Consulting with employees;
- Walk through inspections of work site using a hazard checklist
- Incident, accident and injury data;
- Work process evaluation
- Identification of hazards associated with substances (generally obtained from MSDS)
- Consulting with specialist practitioners and industry association
Risk Management
We examine activities related to the work process and equipment that is to be used, with particular emphasis on the potential risks to employees. A Job Safety Analyse Worksheet (JSA) (See sample in attachment section) is completed where consideration is given to the following:
-
The steps required to perform the task or duties;
-
The nature of the hazard and associated risks;
-
The hazard severity and health effects;
-
Duration and frequency of exposure to hazard;
-
The probability that an event will occur; and
-
Implementing risk controls to eliminate or control the associated risks.
Risk Control Measures
When deciding appropriate measures, we consider practicability. Cost effectiveness and user acceptance s our most important criteria in selecting control options.
Our risk control options in order of priority are:
Design allows hazards to be designed out and control measures to be designed in during the planning phase.
Substitution replaces the material or process with a less hazardous one.
Redesign minimizes risk through redesign and equipment or work processes.
Separation involves isolating the hazard from workers by inclosing it.
Administration involves changing work practices so the time or conditions of risk exposure are reduced.
Personal protective equipment involves using appropriate protective clothing or equipment where other controls are not practicable.
Risk Control Measures
To ensure that’s risks are not created, we review our control measures. We apply the chosen risk control measures to the hazard and assess their effectiveness.
